The Highlander Select teams split this past weekends games against Arlington and Mt. Vernon, going 4 – 4.
Overall the program record is a combined 55 - 27, a 67% winning mark
                     Overall         League
5th Grade:     8 –  12          5 – 8
6th Grade:   19 –    2        12 – 1
7th Grade:     9 –  15          4 – 8
8th Grade:   20 –    2        11 – 2

The 5th graders lost to Arlington in the opener 40-36.  It was a tough battle but it came down to rebounding and they got the best of us. Their kids were huge!  Continuing to work more on boxing out will be an emphasis during practices.  It was a fun game and the kids learned a lot.  In the second game the kids came back strong and beat Mt. Vernon 57-39.  Again, they were huge but we used our speed to neutralize them and overtake them in the end.

The 6th graders won against Arlington, 60 – 57, and it was extra nice. Down 40-29 at halftime, the team rallied and outscored Arlington 31-17 in the second half.

In a very exciting game against Mount Vernon the team won in overtime 55 – 53.  It took a while for the team to show up to play.  They were down by 8 at halftime and 10 going into the fourth quarter.  Down 2 with 6 seconds left, the Scots needed to go the length of the court. Zach dribbled to half court, passed to Alex who took it all the way to the hoop to tie it at the buzzer in regulation.  In overtime, we were tied and held for the last shot.  Stuart made a nice pass to Alex on the block. Alex made one move and drained a 6-footer at the buzzer to win.

With the 7th graders being down two post players it made it difficult for us to match up with Arlington’s size in the first game and lost 68 – 40.  The team got down early in the first quarter but played them close in the second and third before running out of gas in the fourth. Keegan was our player of the game with his defense and hustle. While Konrad paced us on offense with 9 points.  In the 2nd game at Mount Vernon we played them closer than the score shows, but ended up losing 50 - 40.  Liam stepped up for his third double-double of the year 11pt/11rb.  RJ and Tyler stood out on defense collecting 7 steals between the two of them.

The 8th graders first game against Arlington was a tough game from the first whistle to the last.  Arlington really came out firing on all 8 cylinders and jumped out to a 10+ point lead. We responded and kept breaking into their lead through the course of the game. We finally pulled within 3 points and had a last second 3-point attempt to send it into overtime, but came up short 54 – 51.  In the second game vs Mount Vernon they game away victorious, 55 – 49.  The team responded well to the tough loss earlier by playing well. They had a lot of good play by all of the players and this was a nice team victory. We got off to an early lead from the start and kept them at bay for the remainder of the game.

The 8th graders maintain a razor slim lead over the 6th graders for the best overall winning percentage, but the 6th graders have passed the 8th graders for the best league record.  Keep up the great effort everyone!!!

With this weekend being the President’s Day Holiday, we do not have any games scheduled.  We wrap up the WESCO regular schedule with home games against Kamiak and Stanwood.  The 6th grade Stanwood game should be very exciting as Stanwood comes in undefeated.  At the Stanwood Turkey shoot tournament earlier this year, the 6th graders gave Stanwood all they could handle before losing 47 – 40. If the 6th graders handle Kamiak in there first game they will be playing Stanwood for 1st place in the regular season.  Good luck Coach Grinaker and the 6th grade team!!!

Another great match up will be the 8th grade game vs Kamiak.  Kamiak also comes in undefeated.  It will be revenge time for our 8th grade Scots, as it was Kamiak who beat the 8th graders in the WESCO championship game last year as 7th graders.   It should be an exciting day for all teams!!

Thanks to all our great fans!!

“Go Scots!!”
