Weekend of January 26:

Over the past two weeks there has been a great amount of excitement and great things happening for the Highlander Select Basketball program.

Over the MLK Jr. holiday weekend, Coach McCoy and the 7th graders entered a very high level tournament.  Select all-star teams from all over the Puget Sound area and from Oregon were entered.  In this tournament our players competed against some very, very good talent.  Playing against this type of opponents will pay off as they continue to gain experience.  This is a tournament the program needs to strongly consider adding to our schedule next year.  Hats off to Coach McCoy and the 7th grade team for entering this tournament and competing against true “all-star” squads.

Is there anything better than High School Basketball on a Friday night?  During the Shorecrest boy’s varsity game last Friday night, our 6th graders put on a crowd pleasing ½ time scrimmage.  The team was split into two equally divided squads and they played a solid 6 minutes of “Scots” basketball.  With shouts of “shoot –it, shoot-it” from the SC student section, the fans were treated to such dazzling plays as Daniel’s long-distance three point shots, Conin’s rafter-lifting, behind the back pass, and Zach’s 3 pointer to end the scrimmage.  Thanks to the boys and Coach Grinaker for having the 6th graders available to play.  (by the way the SC HS boys won, 64 – 57, in overtime, over #10 state-ranked Meadowdale).

On Tuesday, February 5, the 5th graders will perform at ½ time as well.  Come out and support them, and the SC boy’s, in their final regular season home game.

The WESCO league games resumed on Saturday and the program had its’ first losing day of the season going, 3 – 4.

Our 5th graders continue to make really strong progress as a team fell to both Monroe and Lk Stevens.  Getting out rebounded was a significant factor.  But their hustle, ball handling and shooting continue to improve game by game.  Keep up the solid work Coach Lawson and Coach Lamphier, you’re efforts are making a difference.

In what was billied as the “game of the day” the 6th graders (7 – 0 in WESCO) faced off against the (8 – 0 in Wesco) Monroe team.  After a slow start the Scots took control of the game by containing Monroe’s big man, hitting a variety of 3’s (5 from Stuart) and won, 53 – 47 against a very well coached Monroe team.

In their game against Lk Stevens the Scots, tired and emotionally spent from the Monroe game, were down 10 at halftime and 12 going into the 4th quarter. They finally woke up and had a 26-point 4th quarter. A clutch bucket with 18 seconds left put the Scots up by a one point, but Lake Stevens returned the favor and hit a shot at the buzzer for the 62-61 victory. Lake Stevens deserves the credit for playing 32 minutes of solid basketball.

For the 7th graders, with Monroe not being able to field a 7th grade team, their only game of the day was at Lake Stevens. For the 7th graders they ran into a buzz saw in the Lake Stevens team as they went down in defeat.  To the teams credit they fought to the bitter end giving 110% all the way.

The 8th graders continued their winning ways as well on Saturday.  After a sluggish start in Monroe, they battled back from an early 8-point deficit to cruise to a solid 18-point victory.  At Lake Stevens the 8th graders had to fight to the very end escaping with a 4-point victory.

Next up is home games this coming Saturday, February 2, against Cascade and Oak Harbor.

Thank you everyone!!

Bruce Meyers, Highlander Select President
