Happy New Year!!! Your Highlander Select Basketball program got the New Year off and rolling in a positive direction going 6 - 2 on Saturday. The program was lead by the 6th and 8th graders both sweeping their games and the 5th and 7th graders spliting their two games. For the season, Highlander Select is 39 - 16 overall, a 71% winning mark. For the 5th graders they were in a spirited battle against a strong Shorewood squad. The run and gun game was close for the first half but Shorewood shut down our team in the 3rd quarter and in the end we fell short losing 48 - 30. In the second game against Mountlake Terrace, the team got off to a slow start but battled the entire game. In the end the 5th graders reveneged an earlier season loss to MLT by connecting on a game winning shot as time expired proving a two point victory, 42 - 40!! Way to go 5th graders. Remember..., "it's the not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog". The 6th graders coasted to a solid win in the openner with a 51 - 41 victory over Shorewood. Solid fundamental team play, rebounding and defense made the difference. In their second game the team jumped to an early lead. However, MLT made a game of it mid-way through the 4th quarter with 3 pointers. However, with poise and experience the team won going away, 56 - 51. The team is now 13-1 overall, 6-0 in league. Nice going, keep it up! The 7th graders jumped out to an early lead and beat a determined Shorewood team 44 - 40 in their opener. Their signuature touch defense was the difference in the game. In the game against Mountlake Terrace the team played hard but came up short 51 - 40. The 8th graders continue to roll. They sprinting to early leads in both games and coasted to victories over both Shorewood, 74-63 and MLT, 69 - 59. The the team is 14-1 overall, 5-1 in league. Excellent job everyone!!
