How much does it cost and what does that include? For the 2007 – 2008 season the cost for the 25+ games is $265 plus a $50 refundable deposit for the return of the uniform at the end of the season.
This covers two pre-season tournaments, league games, and the league playoffs. Additionally, it includes a Highlander Select sweatshirt, insurance, and all other costs related to providing an excellent basketball experience for your son. Checks are made payable to “Highlander Select Basketball”.
Practices: When and where are they held? Depending on the grade level of your team, practices will be held either at Shorecrest High School or at The Annex (Old Kellogg Middle School). At this time practice schedules are still being defined by the coaches.
Practices are generally 1 ½ to 2 hours. Prior to our league season we practice 2 – 3 times per week. Once league play begins practices are 1 to 2 times per week.
How many players are on the team, how will my son know if they make the team? We plan on each team having 10 players. If certain situations arise a coach does have the discretion to carry an additional player or two.
On the Sunday following the final try-out, each coach will contact each player who attended the try-outs to inform them personally of their decision.
If my son doesn’t make the team do you know of other programs or options? Because of the need to limit team size, there are players who still want the opportunity to play. We strongly believe we need to help and assist those players in finding alternative programs so they can continue to play and improve. When our coaches call on Sunday, players not selected will be provided phone numbers to other local programs. Additionally, Coach Fischer holds basketball camps during the summer so make sure you provide your name and address to us to get on his mailing list.
Is it a problem if my son plays another sport in addition to basketball during the season? Participation in any select sport is a major commitment. In a skilled sport, such as basketball, it is no different. Making Highlander Select Basketball the number one sports activity during the season is essential to ensure your son enjoys and gains as much out of the experience as he can. How long is the season and when are the pre-season tournaments? Practice begins the week of October 15th. Our first pre-season tournament will be in early November. More information is forthcoming once the tournament is officially announced by the host school. The second tournament is the Stanwood “Turkey Shoot” held November 23 – 25 at Stanwood High School. Our league, the WESCO Youth Feeder League, games begins in early December and extends to the first weekend in March for the league playoffs.
What can you tell me about the WESCO Youth Feeder league? The WESCO feeder league was formed to provide a competitive basketball experience for youths in 5th – 8th grades. Each of the 16 programs in the league draws talent from the local High School in their area to prepare those kids with the essential basketball skills needed prior to entering high school. League games are played typically on Saturday. Depending on other program facilities and weather related conditions Sunday games are possible. Each team plays two games per game day. Game times are: 5th and 7th grade: 1:30 and 4:00 6th and 8th grade: 3:00 and 5:30
Where do we play our league games? The league schedule will be available in mid-November. Our home games are played at Shorecrest High School. Our road games are played in the High School gym of the other programs. To reduce travel time between games, each program is partnered up with a “sister school”. Listed below are the other programs in the league with their sister school.
North Division Arlington and Stanwood Everett and Marysville-Pilchuck Oak Harbor and Mount Vernon Monroe and Lake Stevens
South Division Cascade and Kamiak Shorewood and Mountlake Terrace Jackson and Snohomish Kings is Shorecrest sister school. The league championship is held at Stanwood. Playing time, how do the coaches determine who plays? Since one of the goals of Highlander Select is to offer a competitive basketball experience, our philosophy is that it is not the coaches who determine playing time. Playing time is earned on the basis of each player’s effort, attention, commitment, and ability displayed in practice. Those players with the best ability to combine these skills will receive that greatest amount of playing time. At the same time, it is also our mission to develop all of the players in the program. It is each coach’s responsibility to help the kids improve their skills so that they can be competitive participants in games. So unlike “rec” level programs, playing time is not guaranteed and fluctuates on a game to game basis.
Who are the coaches? We are extremely excited to announce the following coaches for this year.
5th Grade: Coach Mike Lawson: 10+ years as a youth basketball coach. Asst. Coach: Brent Lamphier: Former HS standout in Colorado and recent U of W graduate.
6th Grade: Coach Andrew Grinaker: Former Shorecrest freshman coach, returns for his second year
7th Grade: Coach Mike McCoy: Returns for his fourth year
8th Grade: Coach Suki Wiggs: Returns for his fourth year Asst. Coach: Coach Roger Shands: Returns for his third year
Additionally, the head coach of the Boys basketball program at Shorecrest High School, Coach Fischer and his staff, assist our coaches in teaching and communicating “Scots” basketball technique and philosophy. This sounds great, how can I help and become involved? If you are interested in volunteering to help there are many areas of opportunity. Opportunities include assisting with concessions, gym set-up and clean up, being a team parent, organizing our year-end party, to name a few.
